Instructed patient to do pursed-lip breathing while resting so she can use this technique when feeling short of breath. Instructed patient to breathe in or inhale through nose at a normal rate and depth. Feel lungs fill with air. Purse lips together as if to whistle or play a flute. Breathe out or exhale slowly and gently through mouth, keeping lips pursed. The time it takes to exhale should be 2 to 3 times longer than inhaling.
