Peripheral Blood Draw Procedure


Informed patient/caregiver that SN will be collecting blood draw via venipuncture. Prepared necessary items for phlebotomy draw: Butterfly needle Syringes Blood Collection Tubes Tourniquets Alcohol wipes Gauze pads Sharps Disposal Container Bandages or tape Observed universal safety precautions, washed hands with antibacterial soap and water, donned gloves, selected appropriate vein, applied the tourniquet 3-4 inches above the collection site, cleaned the puncture site by making a smooth circular pass over the site with the alcohol pad, inserted needle to vein, released tourniquet, collected blood specimen for CBC, CMP, removed needle and secured needle lock, covered puncture site with dry gauze and taped in place. Labeled all tubes with patient name, dob, date and time of collection.
