PICC Line Infection Teachings

Taught patient that it is normal to see a small red bump at the site of the catheter insertion. There should be no pain, and after the first dressing change, no drainage. Phlebitis can also occur at the site when PICC line is newly inserted. It is an inflammation of the vein, which can cause pain, tenderness and sometimes leakage at the insertion site. Instructed patient to apply a warm compress on the affected arm but if symptoms persist, to call SN immediately. Also taught patient to observe the site for any of the signs and symptoms of infection such as fever, redness at the insertion site, tenderness, and/or drainage from the insertion site. Instructed patient to call the SN immediately if any of the infection signs and symptoms are observed.
